5 Simple STEM Activities You Can Do at Home Today
You do not need a lab coat or expensive kits to teach your child science and math. Some of the best STEM learning happens with items you already have in your kitchen, bathroom, and backyard. Here are 5 activities you can set up in under 5 minutes.
🌋 Baking Soda Volcano
What you need:
Baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, food coloring, a cup or bottle
Steps:
- Place a cup or small bottle on a tray or in the sink
- Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup
- Add a squirt of dish soap and a few drops of food coloring
- Pour in vinegar and watch the eruption!
What they are learning: Chemical reactions, cause and effect, observation skills. Ask your child to predict what will happen before you pour the vinegar. Try different amounts and see what changes.
🏗️ Marshmallow & Toothpick Structures
What you need:
Marshmallows (regular or mini), toothpicks
Steps:
- Show your child how to connect marshmallows with toothpicks
- Challenge them to build the tallest tower they can
- Try building a bridge between two books
- See if the structure can hold a small toy on top
What they are learning: Engineering, structural stability, problem-solving. Why do triangles make stronger structures than squares? Let them discover through trial and error.
🧊 Ice Rescue Experiment
What you need:
Small toys, a container, water, salt, warm water, droppers
Steps:
- Place small toys in a container of water and freeze overnight
- Give your child the frozen block and tools: salt, warm water, droppers
- Let them figure out how to free the toys
- Talk about what makes ice melt faster
What they are learning: States of matter, temperature, problem-solving. Salt lowers the freezing point of water — your child is learning chemistry without even knowing it!
🌱 Seed in a Bag
What you need:
Ziplock bag, paper towel, bean seeds, tape, water
Steps:
- Wet a paper towel and fold it into a ziplock bag
- Place 2-3 bean seeds on the paper towel
- Seal the bag and tape it to a sunny window
- Check daily and watch the roots and sprout grow
What they are learning: Plant biology, life cycles, patience, observation. Have your child draw the seed each day to create a growth journal. Measure the sprout with a ruler for math practice.
🎨 Color Mixing with Water
What you need:
Clear cups, water, food coloring (red, blue, yellow), droppers or spoons
Steps:
- Fill 3 cups with water and add one primary color to each
- Give your child empty cups and droppers
- Let them mix colors: red + blue = ? red + yellow = ? blue + yellow = ?
- Challenge them to make specific colors like orange, green, or purple
What they are learning: Color theory, prediction, fine motor skills (using droppers). This is both art and science! Ask them to guess the result before mixing.
💡 Why STEM at Home Matters
Children who explore science and math through play develop stronger problem-solving skills, curiosity, and confidence. You do not need to be a scientist — you just need to be willing to ask "What do you think will happen?" and let them find out.
